Microsoft\u2019s Internet Information Services (IIS) is one of the most popular web servers in the world. The latest survey by W3tech<\/strong> shows IIS to be the 3rd<\/sup> most common web server in the world. IIS is extensively used with systems operating on Windows NT family. IIS supports communication protocols such as HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, FTPS, SMTP, and NNTP.<\/p>\n

The renewal process of SSL certificates on the latest versions of IIS is similar in all aspects. These latest versions include IIS 8 and 8.5. For your convenience, we have tried to explain this process as simply as we possible.<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s begin!!!<\/p>\n

Generating certificate signing request (CSR)<\/h3>\n
    \n
  1. Open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager<\/strong> from the Start<\/strong><\/li>\n
  2. On the left panel, choose your <\/span>server\u2019s hostname<\/strong> in the <\/span>Connections<\/strong><\/li>\n
  3. In the central panel, double-click on Server Certificates.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    1. Select Create Certificate Request<\/strong> under the Actions<\/strong> menu on the right-hand side.<\/li><\/ol>\n

      \"IIS<\/p>\n

      1. Now, a Distinguished Name Properties<\/strong> window will appear. Enter the following details:<\/li><\/ol>\n
          \n
        1. Common Name<\/strong>: The common name should contain your fully qualified domain name.<\/li>\n
        2. Organization<\/strong>: Write the legally authorized name of your organization.<\/li>\n
        3. Organizational Unit<\/strong>: It is not compulsory to write this. But if you want to, write the department of the organization.<\/li>\n
        4. City\/Locality<\/strong>: Write the name of the town\/city where your organization is situated.<\/li>\n
        5. State\/Province<\/strong>: Write the name of the state\/province where your organization is located.<\/li>\n
        6. Country\/Region<\/strong>: From the drop-down menu, select the two-digit code of your country.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          1. Verify the information before clicking the Next<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n
            1. The box asking for Cryptographic Service Provider Properties<\/strong> will appear.<\/li><\/ol>\n

              1. Select Microsoft RSA SChannel Cryptographic Provider<\/strong> as the Cryptographic Service Provider.<\/li>\n
              2. Select 2048<\/strong> in the bit length dropdown.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                1. Click Next<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n
                  1. In the File Name<\/strong> window, enter\/browse the location where you want to save the CSR file.<\/strong><\/li><\/ol>\n

                    1. Click on the Finish<\/strong><\/li>\n\t
                    2. Now, log in with your credentials on the website from which you had purchased the certificate.
                    3. Go to the order<\/strong> which you want to renew. Click on the renew<\/strong> option.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                      Now that your SSL renewal process<\/a> is over, you need to install the renewed SSL certificate on your server. Follow the given instructions to install your renewed SSL certificate.<\/p>\n

                      SSL certificate renewal installation on IIS 8 & 8.5<\/h3>\n

                      1. First, save the certificate file named \u2018your_domain_name.cer\u2019 to the IIS server.<\/li>\n\t
                      2. Open Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager<\/strong> from the start screen.<\/li>\n\t
                      3. On the left panel, choose your server\u2019s hostname<\/strong> in the Connections<\/strong><\/li>\n\t
                      4. In the central panel, double-click on Server Certificates.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                        1. Select Complete Certificate Request<\/strong> under the Action menu located on the right-hand side.<\/li><\/ol>\n

                          1. You should see Specify Certificate Authority Response<\/strong> page on your screen. Under the Enter\/Browse the location where you saved the .cer file sent by the certificate authority (CA).<\/li>\n\t
                          2. Now, enter the Friendly Name<\/strong> of the certificate. This name should be kept such that it can be easily identified and distinguished in future.<\/li>\n\t
                          3. Select Personal<\/strong> in Select a certificate store<\/strong> dropdown and Click OK<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                            1. Again, go to Internet Information Services (IIS) Manager<\/strong>. In the Connections<\/strong> panel, expand your web server<\/strong> and then expand Sites<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\t
                            2. Choose the site that you want to equip with SSL certificate.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                              1. Click on Bindings<\/strong> under Actions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\t
                              2. A window named Site<\/strong> Binding <\/strong>should now appear on your screen. Click on the Add<\/strong> button.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                                1. Select HTTPS from the Type<\/strong> Enter the IP address of the website<\/strong> in the IP address column or All Unassigned<\/strong> should be selected.                                 2. Verify all the details entered in the previous step and click OK<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
