It\u2019s a way for a website to prove that it is the legitimate article, run by a legally registered business, and not, say, a fake website that was created to steal their personal information (that\u2019s called phishing).<\/p>\n<p>Now, you may think that never happens, but according to figures from the CA Security Council, while 90% of major companies and corporations have dealt with cyber-attacks, 71% of small and medium-sized businesses have also been targeted. And according to the National Cyber Security Alliance, 60% of small businesses that are victimized end up shuttering within six months of the attack.<\/p>\n<p>Phishing is one of the most common tactics employed by cybercriminals. And the only way to truly prevent it from happening to you is with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sslrenewals.com\/ssl-types\/organization-validation-ssl-certificates.aspx\">Business Authentication (OV or EV) SSL Certificate<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Why is Authentication Important?<\/h3>\n<p>As we alluded to in the previous section, phishing is a real risk in this day and age. Sites will all be labeled either \u201cSecure\u201d or \u201cNot Secure.\u201d That lends itself to a mindset where people assume a site is safe as long as they see a \u201cSecure\u201d indicator next to the URL in the address bar.<\/p>\n<p>Where this all gets dangerous is that the initiative to encrypt the entire internet has spawned several free SSL services. These services are great, their intentions are noble, but they are oftentimes undermanned and lack the resources and infrastructure to prevent issuing certificates to cybercriminals. For instance, Let\u2019s Encrypt only checks Google\u2019s blacklist before issuing.
